Honour for top schools

GOVERNMENT inspectors have highlighted 33 South Yorkshire schools in their annual report which were rated as outstanding in visits carried out over the last year.

Two schools - Barnsley's Barugh Green Primary and Stocksbridge Juniors - receive the highest accolade of all.

They have been judged to be outstanding in three consecutive inspections carried out over the last 15 years.

Eight schools are in the report for the second time in a row - Doncaster's Edenthorpe Hall and Hexthorpe primaries, Rotherham's Anston Park Infants, Rawmarsh Ashwood Juniors and Wales High, and, from Sheffield, Tapton and Fir Vale secondaries and Birley Spa Primary.

Also praised in the report are 12 childminders and Barnsley's Northern College, included for its high standards of adult education provision.

Sheffield's cabinet member for children's services Coun Harry Harpham said he was very excited about the number of schools and childminders listed.

"We will not settle for anything less than the best for the city's children, and continue to work with all our schools to reach the highest possible standards," he said.

"Well done to everyone who has been part of making these services truly outstanding," Coun Harpham added.

Chief Inspector Christine Gilbert said she was delighted to recognise publicly outstanding provision across all areas of education and care.

"Schools and colleges which have been categorised as outstanding in not one, but two or three of their inspection reports over the past 15 years are especially deserving of our commendation," she added.

Outstanding providers are given a distinctive logo which they can use on documents and their website to underline their achievement.
