Hirst's sculpture makes dramatic appearance

FROM one side she's beautiful - if a little naked for some tastes.

But from the other - well, if you pop down to Chatsworth you can make your own mind up. The Virgin Mother, a 35ft tall bronze pregnant lady, has been erected in the grounds of Chatsworth House as part of an exhibition which runs from September 8 to November 4.

From one side she looks a picture of health - but on the other her flesh has been stripped back to leave her intestines and unborn baby on show. She's the work of self-styled shock artist Damien Hirst, famous for works including animals pickled in formaldehyde to jewel-encrusted skulls worth 15 million.

During the Sotheby's selling exhibition of modern and contemporary sculpture The Virgin Mother will stand alongside a figure of supermodel Kate Moss by Marc Quinn, and 25 pieces by other artists.

All the work is for sale so, if you have a couple of million quid handy, you might just pick up a bargain - but take a crane if you want to get it home.
