Hero Hawley backs Samaritans

HOMETOWN hero Richard Hawley urged a packed City Hall to donate generously to the Sheffield Samaritans during his latest sell-out concert at the venue.

And his fans responded to the tune of 1217.75 after the Sheffield singer joked they might need the service after listening to him for the evening.

"I've given them a tenner," he announced on stage, "and that's half my fee."

Richard, from Greystones, has long been a supporter of the Sheffield branch, having officially opened the charity's new premises on Queens Road last July.

Sheffield director Anne Nettleship said: "Richard has always been very supportive of Sheffield Samaritans and we thank him and the audience for supporting our work. This is a fantastic donation."

The money will go towards helping provide confidential support 24 hours a day for people experiencing feelings of distress or despair.
