Heartbroken tributes to a bike-mad son

A HEARTBROKEN family today paid tribute to a "fun loving" biker killed following a collision with a car in Sheffield.

Khalid Callaghan, aged 22, died at Northern General Hospital after his motorbike collided with a Subaru Impreza car on Harborough Road, Manor.

The dad of one was on his way to his mum's house on Castlebeck Drive, Manor, when tragedy struck.

"He had phoned me only 10 minutes earlier to say he was coming round with a Chinese takeaway," said devastated mum Janet.

"I was talking to him and 10 minutes later he was dead. I just can't take it in.

"He was such a caring person, so kind and thoughtful."

Khalid's brother Nabile, 20, said he was "mad about bikes" and was completely devoted to his 10-month-old daughter Lexi and childhood sweetheart Becky Fairhurst, 19.

"He was like my best friend and now he is gone," said Nabile, who lives in Gleadless.

"He loved bikes and cars and he loved his family. He was always laughing and joking, having fun.

"I can't believe he has gone."

Becky, who was just 14 when the couple got together five years ago, is still reeling from the shock.

"He was a wonderful father to Lexi and we both love and miss him so much," she said, speaking from her home on Circle Close, Manor, which the couple shared.

"I will love him for ever and never forget him and he has a beautiful daughter who loves him so much."

Khalid, the oldest of five siblings, who had been driving motorbikes for years, was out with a friend on his blue Yamaha on Tuesday night.

Police believe Khalid was travelling along Harborough Avenue towards Manor Park Centre while the silver Impreza was travelling in the other direction towards Prince of Wales Road.

It is believed the Impreza turned in the entrance to the parking area of Harborough Avenue shops and the two vehicles collided.

Khalid and his 15-year-old pillion passenger were thrown from the motorcycle and across the bonnet of the car.

His passenger was taken to Sheffield Children's Hospital where he is receiving treatment for a fractured right leg, left leg and left wrist.

But Khalid, who also had a flat on Dyke Vale Road in Hackenthorpe, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital where his family had rushed to be by his side.

"I begged him not to die but I knew it was too late," said Janet.

"Khalid was so kind, he would do anything for anyone. We were very close.

“He phoned me or visited me every single day and he was always looking out for me.

“He would never have let anything bad happen to me.”

Khalid also leaves three sisters - Natasha, 15, Jade, 13 and Letitia, three - and his dad Ali, who lives in Rotherham.

The driver of the Subaru, a 31 year-old-man from Sheffield, was uninjured but his passengers, two boys aged 11 and 15, were taken to Sheffield Children’s Hospital with whiplash.

They have both since been released and the driver was arrested and subsequently bailed by police who are investigating the cause of the collision.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash which happened just before 9.30pm.
