Healthy message as Ray uses web

Ray Poll, a nurse consultant who specialises in hepatitis C at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, is penning the monthly blog to reach out to potential patients, and to encourage discussion and awareness about the disease among medics.

The journal is thought to be the first of its kind on a Government website.

Across Sheffield thousands of people could be infected with the hepatitis C virus, which can cause liver damage.

But most are unaware they have it, as it frequently shows few symptoms until years or even decades after contraction.

Worse still, Ray says many patients may be put off seeking treatment because of confusion about the disease.

"It's vital that healthcare professionals feel equipped to provide patients with as much clear information as possible," said Ray.

Although drug users are the biggest group affected, hepatitis C can be transmitted by blood transfusions carried out before 1991, unsterilised equipment for tattoos, acupuncture or body piercing, and occasionally through unprotected sex.

But new treatment is available now that was not a few years ago, and specialist help is on offer through medical testing, counselling, family support, social services, and advice on housing or benefits.

Ray said: "I've come across many patients who are unaware of the information available about hepatitis C, and are therefore misinformed.

Many believe they are going to die prematurely of their infection and have, as a result, delayed seeking medical care."

But by raising awareness of the virus and encouraging people who may be at risk to come forward, it is hoped the Department of Health's 'FaCe It' campaign can help get rid of the stigma of a hepatitis C diagnosis.
