'Green' Sean grows into award

THE talents of green-fingered Sheffield residents were recognised in a gardening awards ceremony.

The Sheffield Gnomes competition celebrated gardening and plant work carried out in Sheffield Homes’ gardens around the city, with winners and runners up receiving prizes and trophies at a Town Hall event.

Residents who live in Sheffield Homes properties competed in five categories, with each winner receiving 100 in gift vouchers and a trophy.

Janet Parry, director of housing management at Sheffield Homes, said: “The quality of entries we received was extremely high with some spectacular examples of flowers and shrubs and imaginative use of space, colour and designs.

“We were delighted to see the variety of gardens in all shapes and sizes and we recognise the time, effort and money the winners invested in making their gardens their own.”

Simon Bullen, senior operations director for Kier, added: “Supporting events such as Gnomes helps our commitment to building positive relationships with all local communities, and we look forward to similar events in the future.”

The youngest of the winners was five-year-old Sean Simmons of Swanbourne Road, Firth Park, who triumphed in the young gardener of the year category with his freesias and sunflowers.
