Green Party candidates ready for poll

THE Green Party has named its candidates who will stand in Sheffield if a General Election is called later this year.

It is fighting in two seats - Heeley and Central, where it already has two councillors.

Coun Bernard Little, who has represented Central Ward on Sheffield Council since 2006, hopes to become MP for Central parliamentary constituency, currently held by retiring Labour MP and former sports minister Richard Caborn.

Coun Little, a member of South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority and trustee of the area Debt Support Unit, said: "The other parties are not prepared to make the big decisions that will protect our children's future. We need to build vibrant local communities in Sheffield that are socially and environmentally secure."

Labour and the Conservatives have not yet named who will stand but the Liberal Democrats' challenger is their group leader on Sheffield Council, Paul Scriven.

The Greens' candidate in Heeley - held by Labour MP and foreign office minister Meg Munn - is Gareth Roberts, who is self employed in the arts and cultural industries, and organises the Green Fair, Green Drinks, Open Air Theatre and Heritage Open Day events.

He is an executive member of Sheffield Civic Trust and member of the Green Economics Institute.
