'Greedy developers' blast

COUNCILLORS have condemned "greedy developers" who tried to cram 14 flats and two shops onto a tiny plot in Chapeltown.

Sheffield Council threw out the application for a three-storey block on the corner of Bevan Way and Burncross Road on the grounds the proposed development was out of keeping, would be overbearing and didn't have enough car parking.

A 138-signature petition was received by councillors from local residents, along with a letter of objection from Angela Smith MP.

They all complained that the scheme was too big and poorly designed.

The site is currently occupied by a small supermarket and a post office with a bit of parking to one side.

As well as the petition, residents wrote 21 letters of objection, including letters from Ecclesfield Parish Council.

Coun Peter Price said: "This is a massive overbuilding on that site. Fourteen flats is ludicrous and it is another case of greedy developers."

He added there should be some guidelines about was acceptable and what was not in order to prevent applications like this ever coming to planning meetings.

"Applications like this are just a waste of everyone's time," he said.

The meeting's chairman Coun Chris Rosling-Josephs added: "If developers want to waste their time it is up to them."

Councillors at Sheffield Council's West and North Planning and Highways Area Board voted to reject the plan.
