Gordon Brown and the lighter side of life in opera

THE controversy surrounding Westminster over the general election non-event, along with the continuing debate over the future of the House of Lords has surprising echoes on stage in Dronfield next week.

Dronfield Light Opera Group is staging Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operetta Iolanthe - which although written more than 100 years ago has a topical resonance to recent events.

"Iolanthe was the seventh collaboration between Gilbert and Sullivan and in it they gently lampoon events in Parliament and the Lords. We couldn't resist adding a new verse to one of the songs to include Gordon Brown," said director Andrea Powell.
