Golden day for Kieran

SHEFFIELD University student Kieran Williams has beaten the best in his class to take gold at the World Triathlon Sprint Championships.

Kieran, aged 29, who is studying for a research degree in civil and structural engineering, took the medal for Great Britain in the 25 to 29 age group in Hamburg.

To win Kieran completed the three sprint triathlon events - a 750 metre swim, a 22km bike ride and a 5km run - in just one hour, four minutes and 50 seconds.

He beat off competition from over 50 other athletes from over 10 different countries in his age group.

During the race, Kieran worked hard in the swim to exit the water in sixth place in his age group.

On the bike, his strongest discipline, he posted the quickest split time to move up to second, before facing a head-to-head challenge against a strong German competitor in the 5km run.

He went on to win the run - and also achieved the third overall fastest time out of the 14 age groups competing.

In the past, Kieran has represented Great Britain in triathlon as part of the 25 to 29 age group team at the 2003 World Championships in New Zealand and at the 2005 World Championships in Hawaii, but this is the first time he has made it to the podium.

"I have been working so hard this year to increase my fitness and manage my studies and to win this title shows how my commitment and dedication has finally paid off," he said.

"The support I have had from my sponsors, my coach, U Sport at The University of Sheffield, and my friends and family has also been crucial to my success and achieving my dream of a World Championship gold medal," Kieran added.
