REVIEW: Professor Green/Rizzle Kicks, O2 Academy2.

Have your say

A NIGHT to look forward to not only because the Prof brings his tour to Sheffield but also as his support are young Brighton duo Rizzle Kicks, currently going viral on YouTube.

Green - 28-year-old Stephen Masterson to his Gran - has risen rapidly since his collaboration with Ed Drewett on breakthrough single I Need You Tonight, prompting Lily Allen, The Streets, Example and others to seek collaboration.

With two albums charting top three and his current tour selling out most venues, including this one, the self-confessed former drug dealer is really flying.

Before PG does his thing the sensational Rizzle Kicks race on stage for a breathtaking 30 minute set which has the crowd bouncing non stop throughout. From opener Prophet (Better Watch It) to closer Down With The Trumpets, Sylvester and Rizzle are doing 100mph. There is little doubt they’d have sold out this venue in their own right, as they have done at Plug in February. Here they not only warm up the crowd but surely tire a lot of them out before the main man.

With a nine-piece backing crew of musicians, singers and rappers, Green tries hard not to be outdone and brings out big guns I Need You Tonight and Just Be Good To Green early doors. The more thoughtful Astronaut follows, with the excellent Monster remix and menacing Jungle landing near the close.

The show ends with Green’s first chart topping single, Read All About It, but most here might agree Rizzle Kicks shaded it this time.
