Amazingly, yesterday would have been the 79th birthday of Elvis Presley.

Sheffielder Mike Lawton, who is a big fan of The King, has organised an Elvis night to celebrate, tomorrow at the Railway Hotel, Penistone Road, Wadsley Bridge.

He is running the event as a fundraiser for the Women of Steel memorial fund, to build a statue in the city to all the Sheffield women who kept the steel industry going in wartime.

There will be a £2 admission charge , with all proceeds from the night going to the fund.

Live music will be by the Elvis tribute band Steve Del Rio & the Deltas, and there will also be an an Elvis quiz and a raffle.

The event will start at 7.30pm.

Another date for the diary of Elvis fans is Wednesday, April 30.

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Elvis’s legendary first recording session at Sun Studios, Elvis Presley – On Stage comes to Sheffield City Hall.

Using the latest technology, Elvis performs via video screens singing lead vocals backed by a band, singers and an orchestra. The idea is to re-create his classic live performances in Las Vegas. Footage comes primarily from material shot for the 1970 concert film Elvis, That’s The Way It Is, and the ’68 Comeback Special.
