Pop princess a hit with crowd

Have your say

On a damp and dreary evening, where is there to go in the fair city of Sheffield to brighten up your night?

One option was to see Ellie Goulding’s opening night of her UK tour at the O2 Academy.

Herefordshire’s pop princess kicked off her UK outings in the city on Thursday – and certainly set the benchmark high for the rest of the gigs.

Bouncing around the stage with footwork more likely seen in a boxing ring, she never dropped the tempo of her performance from the opening with Figure 8 and Ritual.

Her husky voice certainly has its own style and she comes across as someone who enjoys her gigs as much as the audience – something which cannot be said for some performers.

Weaving her way through older tracks, as well as giving a live outing to new material, she made the stage her own and was roundly backed by a packed crowd.

Keeping up the dance momentum with tracks like Animal, Starry Eyed and Stay Awake, she slowed it down a little for Guns & Horses.

Moving on through more material, including her cover of Elton John’s classic Your Song which was sung to perfection she moved onto songs like Joy, Explosions and My Blood before the stunning Anything Can Happen which had the venue bouncing along with her.

One thing you can say is she is certainly one of the hardest-working artists around today, as she makes non-stop trips to either side of the stage.

Then we were treated to I Need Your Love before the encore.

Ellie is clearly one of the UK’s brightest up-and-coming stars and if you missed her, you missed a treat.
