A Sheffield band is planning an extra special gig next week in memory of its former bass player.

Earth Tales’ bassist Myke Barritt died suddenly in 2010, but have continued the tradition of performing his birthday gig on July 27.

Because his birthday coincides with the Tramlines Festival this year, the band have decided to start the celebration early and will play at The Harlequin, Nursery Street, tomorrow at 9pm.

Drummer Nick Parsons, known as Prof, said he joined the group in 1979 when the band found themselves without a drummer and he was thrust into practices.

Nick, aged 56, from Woodseats, said: “This meant the band could play for the 30th birthday of their bass-player, Myke Barritt, on July 27.

“The following year they played the first ever weekend at The Leadmill, and many other local venues, but the landmark gig each year was Myke’s birthday. In May 2010, Myke died suddenly, two months short of his 61st birthday. But he’d already booked the pub for the gig, so more hasty practices took place, and with Myke’s girlfriend Phoebe on bass, we celebrated Myke’s 61st.Since 1979 Myke’s birthday bash has, and will in future continue, to be an annual event, even without Myke.”
