The Big Swing, Cubana
The popular Latin American bar and restaurant is well known for salsa events but another dance style is being added to the mix.
The venue’s move to bigger premises in Leopold Square, Sheffield, last summer has allowed it to introduce weekly Wednesday sessions with The Big Swing.
The popular event first started in the city four years ago and is renowned for attracting some of the best live acts and DJs on the scene together with dance classes for beginners and the experienced alike – and all for free.
The Big Swing will make its debut at Cubana tomorrow with the Sheffield University Big Band.
Next week Manchester’s Gypsies of Bohemia will bring their roaring jazz sound and on March 25 the band will be Leeds-based Tessa Smith and the Applejacks.
Promoter Tim Walker said: “Cubana’s commitment to live music and dancing goes without saying and I can think of no venue better to be the new home of The Big Swing.
“We’re really excited to have the new partnership and I can only see the event going from strength to strength as we develop.”
The evening will start with a dance class from 8pm to 8.45pm with Mike Tate to learn some Charleston and Lindy Hop steps. The class is suitable for beginners and also shows off fun moves for more experienced dancers.
That is followed by two sets from the week’s guest bands.
At 11pm the music continues with The Big Swing resident DJs and special guests playing swing, jazz, rhythm and blues and electro swing until midnight.
