A Hallam Unversity graduate is putting on his first production with a drama group that he has set up himself – all paid for by his day job in a coffee shop.
Joshua Mason has set up StageFlux, a group which is aimed at other young performers. Their first production is a three-hander, tick, tick… Boom!, which tells the story of Jonathan Larson, who wrote the hit musical Rent. Winner of the Outer Critics Circle award for Best off-Broadway musical in 2001, tick, tick...BOOM! is a musical look at the courage it takes to follow your dreams.
Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical tale looks back at his time as a young composer on the brink of turning 30 and falling into oblivion. The show follows the playwright and composer on the journey that led to the creation of the Broadway blockbuster.
At the start of the show his girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city and his best friend is making big bucks on Madison Avenue but Jon is still waiting on tables and trying to write the great American musical.
Set in 1990, this compelling story of personal discovery is presented as a rock musical and it has a unique blend of musical theatre styles. Joshua plays the lead role, Natalie Claire Hollingworth is Sue and Matthew Szadura plays Michael. All three have to perform 13 other parts between them as well.
They will be backed by a live band to perform the show’s 14 songs.
Joshua already has a concert group, StageCrafts, which has been doing charity concerts for over a year, mainly in the Chesterfield area.
The show takes place at the Hallam University student union, HUBs, on Paternoster Row tomorrow and Saturday. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
Tickets are available online from www.stageflux.co.uk or by calling 07899 637816.
