Gale-force energy plus startlingly original material have won this jazz big band dozens of awards during their six years, including Jazz Ensemble of the Year in the 2014 Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

With influences from Duke Ellington through Loose Tubes to Radiohead, their vivid ideas and brilliant mood changes have brought a 21-century twist to the big band sound.

Composer and conductor Ben Cottrell leads the band, which comprises 14 regular members and many guest players.

Ben, a saxophonist based in Manchester, is regularly in demand as an orchestral arranger and has worked with a diverse range of artists including Snarky Puppy, Laura Mvula, Goldie and Everything Everything.

His arrangements have been performed and recorded by world-renowned orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Metropole Orkest (Netherlands) and The Heritage Orchestra.

The band’s debut album Big Ideas was released in March 2012 on Efpi Records.

The independent label was co-founded by three of the original band members which has since grown into an umbrella organisation representing a growing roster of emerging musicians.

The band play the Ecclesall Road venue tomorrow night. Advance tickets:
