Gearing up to help RSPCA

ANIMAL lovers are pedalling for pennies in the latest event to raise cash for a new RSPCA centre in Sheffield.

The World's Biggest Bike - a 24-seater - will be making its way across Sheffield city centre on Saturday October 13 in aid of a new shelter in Attercliffe.

Mark Webster, from Capita Hartshead, who have sponsored the bike, said: "We are delighted to be supporting this event. With animal cruelty statistics in this area at an all-time high, the new centre is vital to Sheffield and will ensure that the valuable work of the RSPCA can continue to help animals in dire need."

Kate Payton, general manager of the RSPCA's Sheffield branch, said: "This type of event is great for us because it's really different and will ensure we remain in the public eye even while our current shelter is closed.

"We have two full teams taking part in the event but if anyone else would like to join us, we can always accommodate more people."

She also thanked Charity Bikes for providing the cycles for the event, which was originally planned for June but was postponed in the wake of the city's floods.

The RSPCA's Spring Street shelter was also hit by the floods - the ground floor of the building was completely underwater and the building is still without power.
