Fumes fear as blaze destroys barn and farm machinery

FIRE investigators have examined the remains of a barn destroyed in a fire which raged into the early hours of yesterday.

At the height of the blaze at Storrs Green Farm, Storrs, near Stannington, crews from three fire engines were battling to bring the flames under control.

The barn, which measured 30 metres by 10metres, was full of hay, farm machinery and nitrogen-based fertiliser when it went up in flames on Monday night.

Because of safety concerns about the fertiliser, police urged local residents to keep their windows closed to prevents fumes getting into their homes.

They spent yesterday morning damping down the charred remains of the building and its contents to ensure there were no further flare-ups.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been identified, but it is not believed to be suspicious.
