Running a chip shop is a labour of love for one Sheffield couple – and now their chippy has been named South Yorkshire’s number one.
Steve Mosley and Jo Ashton-Mosley have been married for six years and went into business together at Dykes Shoal Chippy, Hillsborough, in August 2013.
Since then, the couple’s shop has become a firm favourite, with customers flocking to the Dykes Hall Road premises from across the city.
The high-frying chip shop has now been crowned The Star’s Chip Shop of the Year 2015 following a public vote.
The couple, who have three children between them, said it is their traditionally-cooked fish and chips paired with excellent customer service which keeps people coming back week after week.
Steve said: “We fry all our products in beef dripping and we are cooking the traditional, old way. We use a 30 year-old range and use all the techniques that they used back in the 1970s to get that flavour that has been lost in a lot of other places.
“We also use fresh fish which hasn’t been frozen, and have a local potato supplier.”
Both Jo and Steve took career changes to take on Dykes Shoal Chippy – Steve was a manager in the recycling industry, while Jo was a sales assistant for luxury cookers.
Steve, aged 52, said: “After 30 years in the same industry, redundancy came along.
“The shop appeared for sale, so we decided to go for it and try something completely different.
“I knew I couldn’t do it all by myself so Jo put in her notice and we took this on together. It’s just the two of us.”
Jo, aged 46, said: “The best part about it is I get to work with my best friend every day. We have been here for 19 months now and it’s been 19 months of hard grafting, but we love it and have the best customers we could have ever wished for.”
Rob Hollingworth, The Star managing editor, said the couple were deserving winners.
