IT’S a reliable choice when hunting for a decent Italian restaurant – but the takeaway side of Pizza Express is something I hadn’t given a try.
The chain has two restaurants in Sheffield, at Devonshire Green and Meadowhall, both of which offer boxes of delights to take home.
The Devonshire Green restaurant is well-located for anyone living in one of the trendy flats which has sprung up in the area in recent years – and also hungry city centre workers.
To avoid any waiting when I arrived, we called in advance to place an order and it was ready on arrival 10 minutes later. Express service indeed.
Most items on the menu are available to take away, including pasta dishes and the chain’s famous dough balls, complete with a small pot of garlic butter.
Our order was an American Hot pepperoni pizza with hot green peppers on one of the larger, thin and crispy Romana bases.
We also ordered a slightly thicker classic-base Giardiniera – a vegetarian option with asparagus, artichokes, mushrooms, red peppers, tomatoes, olives... you name it.
No complaints about the plentiful toppings.
And, it being a Pizza Express meal, we decided to have a portion of dough balls to share, too.
Apparently, the takeaway option is quite popular at the Devonshire Green branch.
And it’s value for money, too, with a new offer that is just being launched – order two of the 12 pizza varieties on the classic menu for a tenner.
Not bad for a quality takeaway – but strictly one for fans of Italian-style pizza, not deep pan.
That’s not on the menu, which is no bad thing.
With Pizza Express pizzas being thin and crispy, so lower in calories, it means you need not have a health guilt trip about having a takeaway.
