An organic fruit and veg stall popular with city chefs and home cooks looking for unusual, seasonally-grown produce and foraged finds has outgrown its home in The Moor Market and is setting up shop.
Barra Organics left the market in December and reopens on Friday Jan 23 in the old Evermore sweet shop on Sharrow Vale Road. Owner Moya Sketchley, who learned about organic growing as a volunteer with food projects Grow Sheffield and Abundance Sheffield then had a stall at farmers’ markets, will be a skip away from The Sharrow Marrow shop where she learned the trade.
Produce comes from Wortley Hall kitchen garden and Freeman College biodynamic farm at High Riggs, plus a growing network of organic farms and importers. Moya has even started trade links with a women’s organic coffee cooperative in Nicaragua, which she visited with a Sheffield friendship delegation. Shelves will also be lined with locally ground flour, organic beauty and health products.
Regulars also include those on celiac, Paleo and vegan diets - and allotment holders. “They appreciate the superior taste of home grown. We miss them in the summer though,” says Moya.
