I have fond memories of visiting the Pheasant, at Oughtibridge, for lunch after playing in the nearby park.
Recently refurbished in the style of a modern bar and grill, I took for granted that we would get a table as easily as grandad did in our childhood - but was proved wrong.
Even though it was full with reservations on our visit staff said we could use one of the tables until the booked diners came in. The sleek, stylish and contemporary feel along with the extremely accommodating staff made for a very relaxing welcome.
The menu offers small plates, ideal for sharers or grazers, a selection could be used as a main meal and there is a pleasing variety of dishes to choose from.
For starters we shared charred halloumi, £5.45, small cubes of grilled cheese with diced beetroot, lettuce, new potatoes, red onion, mixed leaf and garnished with a subtle tzatziki dip. The dish was tasty and refreshing, I could have had this for my main meal.
A lamb samosa, also £5.45, was coated in a crispy pastry, deep fried and filled with lamb and lightly seasoned mince filling, served with a salad and a delicate mango chutney.
For our mains mum ordered fish and chips which for £8.95 was generous in size.
The fish was lightly battered. white and flakey inside, served with twice cooked chips and peas.
I had steak and chips, at £11.50. The 8oz steak came perfectly cooked, with salad, onion rings, a grilled tomato and the legendary twice cooked chips, which could win an award all of their own. I did order an extra sauce, £2, this was extremely creamy and well flavoured with peppercorns.
Of course we needed to sample a dessert too.
All desserts are homemade, and featured such temptations as Bakewell tart, chocolate brownie or treacle tart.
I went for the summer fruits Eton mess, priced at £5.95.
Strawberries, and other berries were layered in a thick indulgent cream with pieces of chewy meringue, and a pot of pouring cream on the side.
My mum went for the wildberry and elderflower cheesecake, also £5.95. This had a crumb base with a dense cheese cake cream filling topped with a rich fruit topping.
Our meal with two drinks came to £53.35.
Delightful place, staff and food all well worth a visit - but don’t forget to book in advance!
