FLOODS: Huge crane restores trail

WORK to reopen the Transpennine Trail after the ravages of the June floods has begun in South Yorkshire - with the help of a massive 100 tonne crane.

The crane was brought in to lift a bridge back into place after it was ripped from its moorings by the floods, marking the start of 3 million of work to get the trail back into use.

The crane had to trundle down a specially-laid 500m track near Manvers at Wath to get into position to hoist the bridge back into place yesterday morning.

It brings an end to the last significant closure on the popular route, where many sections of the paths were damaged or swept away.

The operation was funded by Yorkshire Forward as part of plans to create a new off-road section between Dearne Road and Mexborough Road.

Workers will resurface a stretch of the route from Old Moor to Dearne Road.
