First look at plans for Sheffield five-star hotel

BUSINESS and tourism chiefs have given the thumbs up to plans to bring the first five star hotel to Sheffield, as designs go on show in the city for the first time.

The 38 million development will complete the transformation of Sheffield's Victoria Quays corridor, bringing the five-star 198-room Crowne Plaza and a 161 room Express by Holiday Inn to the city.

The project also makes use of the nine arches beneath Victoria Station Road, to create what are being described as "a selection of quality restaurant outlets".

Plans for the development go on show at the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria, Sheffield, tomorrow (FRI) from 1pm to 6pm.

The event will give businesses and members of the public the chance to view and discuss the designs for the first time.

Nigel Tomlinson, chief executive of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, said: "I fully support this development, which would be a major boost for Sheffield."

Richard Jones, chief executive of Yorkshire South Tourism, said: "As an organisation deeply involved in driving quality and product in South Yorkshire we are very pleased to see one of our independent hotels striving to bring quality bedrooms and services to the region."
