Extra police patrols after man stabbed

EXTRA police patrols have been ordered in a Sheffield suburb after a brawl between two gangs ended when a man was stabbed in his stomach.

Police deployed extra officers, including Police Community Support Officers, to patrol the area on foot and in cars to avoid any repercussions from the attack on London Road last week.

They concentrated on London Road near takeaway food stores and streets around Highfield and Broomhall.

The move was prompted by a disturbance last Tuesday between Afro Caribbean and Somali men, which resulted in one man being stabbed in his stomach.

Police discovered a 22-year-old man slumped in the road, at the London Road junction with Boston Street, nursing his injuries.

He was taken to the Northern General Hospital and a police investigation was launched.

Police are trying to establish whether the fight was linked to other incidents of disorder.

Det Insp Zaf Ali, of Woodseats CID, said: “Extra patrols were put on over the weekend and will continue to reassure the public after the last disturbance on London Road.

“The message we want to stress to the public is that we will not tolerate these kinds of incidents.”

Anyone with information about the stabbing should call Woodseats CID on 0114 296 3603 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
