Empty homes audit after vandal attack

HOUSING chiefs have been ordered to conduct a full audit of empty properties in Sheffield after a house without tenants for 12 months was wrecked by vandals.

Coun Chris Weldon, Sheffield Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “It is completely unacceptable that this property has been left empty for so long and I have made it clear to Sheffield Homes that this situation is not acceptable.

“I am determined to make sure that we make the best use of our council homes - which are in great demand - and this means cutting down on the amount of time that homes lie empty.

“I want to ensure that families on the housing waiting list do not have to wait any longer than is absolutely necessary.

“I have asked Sheffield Homes for a full audit of these properties. We cannot have homes in this city lying empty when there are people waiting to move.” The vandalised house was on Chesterfield Road, Heeley.
