Drink-drugs tests up

MORE than 4,500 motorists were tested for drink and drugs on South Yorkshire roads over the summer.

Police breathalysed 4,492 drivers and tested another 31 for signs of drug taking as part of an annual crackdown. Some 218 proved positive for drink driving, failed to provide a specimen, or refused the breath test, and 10 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs - 17 per cent down on last year's figures.

South Yorkshire Police Chief Constable Med Hughes said: "I'm grateful for the efforts made by our officers to target younger drivers for drink driving and for drugs. We will continue to pursue drivers who put the lives of others at risk."
