The stage has suffered a lot of wear and tear and is now due for a replacement.

Mark Feakins, executive producer of Sheffield Theatres, said: "At the time of its design a thrust stage of this scale was daring and unique.

"It has allowed brave and extraordinary work to be created on it ever since. Its openness means that the Crucible is a theatre for actors and audiences to truly connect. The stage is truly the beating heart of Sheffield Theatres."

The new stage will keep the same shape, but will be lighter and more manoeuvrable: easier to lower for the World Snooker tournament so everyone can see the tables.
