Do a good turn and review rule

THERE was a time when people reached the age of 65, they gave a huge sigh of relief and switched off, leaving an active and challenging life for the comforts and ease of retirement. Today's pensioners are a different breed. They are more likely to take a gap year than take on an allotment.

Sadly, Girlguiding UK - an organisation which enjoys the respect and admiration even of those whose children never joined its ranks - has its head firmly buried in yesterday’s sand.

They believe ladies should retire from its ranks when they reach 65, thus depriving themselves of some of their most able and experienced supporters.

We are now in an age when volunteers are as precious as gold. And when such supporters find they finally have the time, as well as the energy, to devote to the cause, they should be welcomed with open arms. Please, Girlguiding UK, make today’s good turn a review of your regulations.

Keeping on top of running repairs

AN 80 million schools windfall, to carry out repairs and refurbishments - which is extra to the cash on offer to rebuild and modernise secondary schools - may seem like a tidy sum.

But anyone who has called in the builders recently will know that 34,000 a year - the amount an average primary school will receive under the deal - will not go all that far.

However, it is a step in the right direction and, finally, ensures that schools are able to keep on top of running repairs. That is the key to providing schools which our children deserve.

His appearance on long-running TV complaints show Points of View last weekend prompted a flurry of complaints of its own, thanks to a pair of tight trousers that left little to the imagination. What we’d like to know, though, is what sort of viewer looks at dear old Terry’s crotch in the first place?
