Dispute can only damage

WE could be seeing the start of the end for the Royal Mail as the service is hit by strike action - and the first customers take their business elsewhere.

In a throwback to the bad old days of industrial bickering, union and management have argued themselves into distant corners with no apparent resolution to bring them together.

As a consequence, businesses which rely on the mail are set to lose millions, the workers will lose wages and the Royal Mail will lose customers. For it must be high on many organisations' agendas to seek different ways of getting their message across to the public.

The union has turned its anger on the Government - the ultimate owners of the postal service - asking them to intervene but what would be their reaction if a minister told them to stop complaining and get back to work? This is a dispute brought by management and union and it is for them to resolve their differences before more customers desert them.

Soccer club will help city to win

BLADES fans will no doubt be jubilant over plans to develop their beloved Bramall Lane stadium, increasing its capacity to 40,000. But the proposals go much further than pleasing Saturday afternoon soccer crowds.

They are aimed at continuing the modernisation of Sheffield United as a business and, if approved, will extend its potential to play a wider role in the commercial life of the city.

And that is as it should be. Our two football clubs are among our finest ambassadors and their power to attract business and investment can only work for the benefit of all.
