Development gets go-ahead

PLANS for 100 flats, offices and training facilities in Garden Street in Sheffield for use by the University of Sheffield have been given the go-ahead.

The development, which will see the present industrial buildings demolished and replaced with flats and offices in blocks ranging from four and ten storeys in height, was given the green light by Sheffield Council’s City Centre, South and East Planning and Highways Area Board.

The site, across the road from the well-known Fagan’s pub, and bordered by Broad Lane and Garden Street, is within the Well Meadow Conservation Area, and would provide educational teaching facilities and accommodation.

Officers said they had asked for the design of the building to be altered so it did not detract from views of St Vincent’s Church.

But developers told the meeting they were not happy at having to make last minute changes.

Officers said they had only received amended plans from developers just days before the planning meeting.

Coun John Hesketh said: “I find it impossible to believe that the applicant is asked to make changes on a Thursday - two working days before the planning meeting. It seems that they have been bounced into it.”
