Couple have done brolly well

LIKE most brides Grace Couldwell enjoyed a wedding shower – after meeting her husband-to-be in an umbrella factory!

Now she and husband Roy have celebrated their diamond anniversary, tying the knot a year after they first met at Samuel Fox’s factory in Stocksbridge more than 60 years ago.

The Loxley couple marked their milestone with a party at home, welcoming family and friends including the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Arthur Dunworth. They continued the celebrations the following weekend with a buffet at the Wadsley Jack Inn in Wadsley.

Grace, aged 78, and Roy, 81, had two sons, David and Steven. Steven dieed in a road accident aged just 20.

They have twin grandsons, George and Oliver, although Roy said: “They don’t look anything alike – you wouldn’t even know they are brothers!”

As well as his career as a precision tool maker, Roy represented Stocksbridge on both the district and city councils.

Grace has always enjoyed dress-making, and Roy said he was a “lucky man” to have been treated to her good cooking over the years. And he joked: “I’d agree that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach!”

Roy said: “We still can’t really believe it’s been 60 years! But you sit here, and you look around at all the cards – including one from the Queen – and the flowers, and you know it’s got to be right!”
