Condolences: Sheffield author Fred Pass.

Well-known Sheffield author Fred Pass has been found dead after a fall from a block of flats in the city.

Fred found fame late in life with his nostalgic book Weerz Me Dad?, a humorous account of growing up in Sheffield during the 1940s and 50s. In 2005 Sheffielders voted the best-seller - which raised thousands of pounds for St Luke's Hospice - their second favourite book ever.

A new book, Weerz Me Mam?, is due to go on sale soon.

News of Fred's death brought the following tributes.

Donna B, Sheffield.

fred was a true gentle man and will be sadly missed by all

Howard,Sheffield.

My sister bought me one of Freds books a year or so ago. Although not as old as Fred, some of the things he mentioned reminded me of my childhood. A true Sheffield man who will be missed.
