Concern over road safety

A PLEA for road alterations at a junction residents claimed was dangerous have been rejected - but Sheffield Council agreed to repaint road markings and have vegetation cut back to improve visibility.

A petition had been signed by 186 people calling for double white lines to prevent overtaking, a reduction in the speed limit from 60mph to 40mph and the creation of a bus stop pull-in area on Manchester Road at the junction with More Hall Lane, between Wharncliffe Side and Deepcar.

Protesters also wanted vegetation trimmed because it was blocking drivers’ views as they turned out of the side road.

But council highways officers found only three accidents had occurred at the junction in the last five years - none of which was serious - and that few people used the bus stop, not justifying the expense of creating an area for buses to pull in. Their report recommending no changes at the site was approved by members of the West and North Planning and Highways Area Board.
