City centre workers facing parking ban

COMMUTERS are to be banned from leaving their cars in a Sheffield neighbourhood dubbed a "park-and-ride facility for city centre workers" when new restrictions come into force.

Streets around Sharrowvale have been choked by city centre workers parking for free but, from October 1, many spaces will be restricted to residents, who must obtain permits from the council.

And, when the changes come into force, other spaces in the area, which is bordered by Ecclesall Road, Psalter Lane, Sharrow Lane, London Road and St Mary's Road, will only be available for short stay pay-and-display parking, costing 20p an hour. The scheme has been welcomed by businesswoman Catherine Vickers, owner of the Flora shop on Ecclesall Road.

She said: "At the moment, people come and park on Ecclesall Road and go into town, not picking up their car until gone 4.30pm.

"Customers will be able to park up and do their shopping, and hopefully this will lead to a higher turnover of customers for local businesses."

Coun Bryan Lodge, Sheffield Council cabinet member for transport, said: "It's important in giving some priority back to residents who are currently suffering severe parking difficulties. The area has been used almost like a park-and-ride for city centre workers."
