Cig law change accepted in city

RETAILERS in Sheffield have reported no problems following the raising of age restrictions for tobacco, which came into force yesterday, meaning people have to be aged 18 instead of 16 to buy cigarettes or tobacco products.

Tara Deakin, of GT News, Arundel Gate, said: "I had to turn away a few people but they were fine about it."

Other newsagents across the city experienced no trouble with young people who had to be refused sales.

Shopskeepers can be fined up to 2,500 for selling to underage people - or 1,000 for failing to display signs warning of the new age restriction.
