Check that furniture has passed cigarette and match test

QUESTION: WHEN buying new furniture what's the first thing you should look out for: quality, price or comfort?

ANSWER: None of the above.

Sheffield MP Meg Munn is urging consumers to start by checking for a triangular swing ticket which indicates the fabric has passed a cigarette AND a match test.

In recent months Trading Standards have found a number of firms selling furniture with labels which show the item has passed the cigarette test only.

In the past four years there have been 48 convictions for furniture not complying with Furniture and Furnishings Fire Safety Regulations. But the actual figure for offenders is likely to be much higher, according to The Office of Fair Trading.

Between 1988 and 1997 the regulations saved at least 710 lives and prevented at least 5,770 injuries, according to government figures.

Meg said: “I urge everyone to keep an eye out for illegally labelled furniture. It is very important that furniture suppliers enforce the UK’s strict regulations to ensure public safety.”
