Challenge on school places

GREEN Party councillors have challenged Sheffield education bosses to reveal how they plan to deal with more surplus school places.

The issue caused a furore when the council decided it had to merge Wisewood and Myers Grove secondary schools to tackle the problem in the north-west of the city.

But there are further pupil places which are unfilled elsewhere in Sheffield. The authority is committed to removing them to ensure it receives hundreds of millions of government cash to replace crumbling buildings.

Coun Jillian Creasy, who represents Central ward, said: "We think this issue should be debated. If there is a plan to reduce school places, let's see it and let's have some wider contribution rather than risk another six months going by, then plans being announced to shut another school."
