Campaigners target 'climate criminal' bank

CUSTOMERS were handed leaflets outside a Sheffield bank which environmental campaigners have accused of being a "climate criminal".

Protesters gave flyers to people at the Royal Bank of Scotland, Whitham Road, Broomhill.

The demonstration was organised by activists including members of Friends of the Earth – who are angry the bank is helping finance projects such as a new gas pipeline in Wales.

The also believe it should not be giving loans to the aviation industry.

Environmentalists say more focus should be given to reducing use of fossil fuels such as gas, rather than expanding distribution networks.

And they oppose aviation due to greenhouse gases emitted by planes.

The Sheffield protest was one of a number taking place around the country.

But Royal Bank of Scotland says it is being unfairly targeted.

A spokeswoman said: "We only provide finance to responsibly-operated oil and gas projects and are committed to assessing the social and environmental impact of projects before providing funding."
