Burst gas pipe alert

A DERBYSHIRE hamlet had to be evacuated yesterday after council workers hit a major gas pipe whilst digging the road.

The population of Wardlow Myers - which includes a garage and pub along with several houses - was evacuated after a digger burst the pipe under the A623 causing a gas leak.

A fire crew from Bradwell attended and the road closed by police while the gas board were called in to deal with the incident, which happened at around 10.50am.

Gas board engineers capped the leak at 1.32pm and residents were allowed back home soon after.
