Bogus callers target town

POLICE in Chesterfield are probing two attempted distraction burglaries - one where two men managed to con their way into an OAP's house and another where men were denied entry.

In the first incident, reported at 3.45pm on Monday, a man got into an 82-year-old man's house claiming he was fixing a washing machine at a neighbouring house and needed to turn his water off.

While he was asking the man to help him with the water supply another man sneaked in and searched the rooms but nothing was stolen.

The first man was aged 20 to 30, white and wore black trousers and a white shirt. The second had dark hair, dark trousers and a brown fawn jacket.

Thirty minutes later two men called at a house in New Street, North Wingfield, claiming there had been a water leak nearby and they needed access to the 82-year-old woman's house but she refused and they left empty handed.

Anyone with information should call Derbyshire Police on 0845 123 3333.
