Bid to save 'workhouse'

CALLS have been made for historic buildings to be preserved at a South Yorkshire school set for redevelopment.

Plans have been submitted to Barnsley Council to demolish Penistone Grammar School and construct an 'advanced learning centre' at the site, in Huddersfield Road.

But South Yorkshire Archaeological Service said: "Several of the buildings are of architectural and historical interest."

It is concerned about a former workhouse, designed by "renowned 19th century architects Lockwood and Mason" and two early 20th century school buildings.
