Residents come together to arrange their own Sheffield neighbourhood bonfire
Clean up plan in place for after the fire, say organisers
Residents in a Sheffield neighbourhood have arranged their own event to come together as a community for Bonfire Night.
Locals have contributed wood for the bonfire which is due to be lit on the public green space on the city’s Batemoor estate, with a fire marshal arranged and plans for food and fireworks.

Alfie Sloane, one of the organisers, said locals had been keeping a close eye on the site ahead of Bonfire Night, and had spoken to police and council officials while organising the event.
He said: “The council has been out and, so have some of the police community support officers, to make sure that it’s not just flytipping there. They suggested we keep an eye on it, but it’s still going ahead.”
Organiser are taping off the areas around the fire and the fireworks, and have arranged for food and music.
“We’ve not had a bonfire here for as along as I can remember,” said Alfie. “It’s bringing the community together.”
He said council officials had said they will provide some help for a bigger event next year.
Organisers plan to put the ashes in bags tomorrow to be taken away, and to returf or reseed any of the grass which is scorched by the fire.
Sheffield Council was approached for comment.
