Award for 'Good Samaritan' bus driver

A SHEFFIELD bus driver who helped an elderly Alzheimer's sufferer to safety has won an award.

Dave Jones, who works for bus firm First at its Olive Grove depot in Sheffield, could now be in line for a five-star worldwide holiday worth 5,000.

He is the monthly winner of 'Superstars', a competition that rewards staff for acts of good work and the members of the public that nominate them.

Dave, who has been a bus driver for four years, was driving his number 52 bus between Woodhouse Station and Crookes when he picked up an elderly lady in a confused and distressed state, who had no idea where she was or where she was going.

Dave radioed his managers at the Olive Grove bus depot, who immediately sent another bus to the scene.

Dave's existing passengers were transferred onto the replacement bus and, with the support of another passenger, Dave comforted the frightened lady and then drove his bus to Attercliffe Police Station to make sure the lady received professional assistance.

He said today: "I was very surprised when I was told the passenger who helped me deal with the elderly lady had nominated me for the Superstars prize.

"There was never any question of me not helping this frightened lady, who I have since found out suffers from Alzheimer's. I would hope others would help my elderly relatives if they were lost, confused and frightened."

Dave was awarded 100 of high street shopping vouchers at a prize-giving ceremony, and a month's buss pass will be sent to the nominee.

Nomination forms are available on First buses and at bus stations throughout Yorkshire.
