Ant and Dec are taking their Takeaway show on a live arena tour and admit it will be “nerve-wracking fun” in front of 13,000-plus fans in Sheffield, writes Graham Walker.
The family fun show, which will follow the format of their Saturday Night Takeaway, comes to the Motorpoint Arena on Tuesday, September 2.
Tickets go on sale Friday, November 8, at 9am.
The 16-date tour will see TV’s best loved double act travelling the length and breadth of the country to the UK’s biggest arenas and will give people the chance to experience Takeaway live on stage.
They promise it will be packed with special guests, amazing prizes to be won and lots of surprises for the audience, just like their award winning ITV show, launched in 2002, which features crazy pranks, mind-boggling challenges and competitions, attracting around eight million viewers.
The duo, about to fly out to Australia for a new series of I’m A Celebrity, announced the Takeaway On Tour show in London and chatted to The Star.
Ant said: “There will be a lots of nerves. When you get to perform in front of millions of people on TV you don’t get to see their faces or the whites of their eyes. Live on stage there will be a few nerves but a lot of excitement at the same time.”
Dec added: “No matter how hard you try, you can’t imagine eight million people. You just don’t know what that looks like. But 13,000 people in front of you, that’s quite a spectacle. So it will be quite nerve-wracking but that’s what’s going to make it so much fun. It’s going to be different every night.
“Those 13,000 people will play a huge part in the show.
“We haven’t been to Sheffield for ages. I remember playing there on the Smash Hits tour as PJ and Duncan, with East 17 and Sean Maguire.”
The series has gone from strength to strength, running for nine series and picking up every award going.
After a break in 2010 the show returned for its 10th series this year to hit ratings and accolade with over 8 million people tuning in each week.
Ant said: “Takeaway is the one show that people always tell us they’d love to be in the audience for, so we’ve decided to take the show to them!
“Just like the TV show the audience will have a chance of winning some fantastic prizes as well as being an essential part of the show.
Dec added: “It’s been an ambition of ours for a long time to go on tour and we can’t wait to hit the road!”
Kim Gavin who was Artistic Director on the Olympic and Paralympic Closing ceremonies will be Artistic Director on the tour.
The show will be a co-production between James Grant Live/Ant & Dec and ITV Studios. The tour is being promoted by SJM Concerts.
Paul Kanareck, Director of Brands at ITV said: “We are thrilled to be working with James Grant Live to produce the first ever Ant and Dec Tour.
“Taking Saturday Night Takeaway on the road will be a real treat for the many millions of fans and viewers of the ITV show, and we are thrilled that ITV’s Brand Extensions team in partnership with James Grant Live will bring this to life next year.”
Rob Ballantine, Director at SJM Concerts said: “We are delighted to announce that the Nations favourite TV personalities are giving the public the chance they’ve been craving, to experience Ant and Dec live for the very first time.
“After being entertained in their living rooms by Ant and Dec for many years the public can now enjoy a fully live stage show in one of the many arenas around the UK. It’s sure to be the must see family show of Summer 2014.”
Ant and Dec and their shows have won a staggering 23 National Television Awards, including Most Popular Entertainment Presenters for the last twelve years in a row.
They have won six British Comedy Awards, a BAFTA and a variety of other industry accolades. Just recently Ant and Dec won a trio of TV Choice awards including one for Best Entertainment Show for Saturday Night Takeaway.
