Asbestos support group's crisis

A SUPPORT group which helps victims of asbestos-related disease in South Yorkshire is facing closure unless it can secure more funding.

Sheffield and Rotherham Asbestos Group, which was founded in 1994, is desperate for cash.

The voluntary group, which previously received funding from the National Lottery, qualifies for very little government support.

It relies on donations from solicitors firms, trade unions and individuals to keep going and has had to make cutbacks in recent years.

Carol Gill, a SARAG trustee who works on behalf of asbestos victims for Barnsley firm Raleys Solicitors, is urging businesses in South Yorkshire not to let the service disappear.

She said: “Because of South Yorkshire's industrial heritage, asbestos has a significant impact on our communities. But many people who suffer as a result of being exposed to asbestos do not know where to turn for advice and support - that is where SARAG comes in.

“From a legal standpoint, most people do not know where to begin making claims for industrial injury or disability compensation.’’
