Wallace and Gromit brought their Musical Marvels to Sheffield – and this is what we thought

And this weekend, the city was home to a dynamic duo from my own youth, as Wallace and Gromit mosied into town with their own rendition of ‘My Concerto in Ee, Lad.’

For long-term fans, the afternoon was stuffed with nods to the popular 90s series - everything from video montages of Wallace’s love life, to the costumes worn by members of the orchestra, which included hats made of cheese, dog ears, and chefs hats.

To mark the pair’s 30th anniversary, the event was humorously presented by Matthew Sharp, who communicated messages to the audience from Wallace and Gromit backstage, and was accompanied onstage by the Picture House Orchestra – easily the highlight of the experience.

There were times in the first half when those there to enjoy Wallace and Gromit could be forgiven for feeling that the show was merely filling time, but things picked up when the duo’s ‘masterpiece' finally made it to the stage.

The second half brought a screening of the classic Aardman animation, ‘The Wrong Trousers,’ again with live orchestral accompaniment – a world first, and bringing a real spark of magic to a Sheffield afternoon.

All in all, despite losing its way a little at times, good fun that fans old and young will enjoy.
