Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday announced a four-week delay to the final stage of lockdown easing, when all legal restrictions will be lifted in England, which was due to happen on June 21.

The new date of July 19 falls just five days before this year’s sell-out Tramlines festival is scheduled to begin at Hillsborough Park on Saturday, July 24.

While that means it could legally still go ahead if the Government sticks to the new date, any further postponement of lockdown easing would force its cancellation, with the existing limit on capacity for outdoor events standing at 4,000, leaving little time to react should that happen.

Ahead of Mr Johnson’s announcement, Tramlines issued an update saying the team had been busy getting things ready to ‘throw a much-needed party’ but would need a few days to ‘digest the guidance to see how it affects our plans’.

“Your continued patience and support is greatly appreciated and so we ask if you could please bear in mind that we will be receiving and processing any information from the Government at the same time as you,” organisers posted on Facebook.

“Our team will need a few days to digest the guidance to see how it affects our plans. Rest assured, we will let you know how the announcement impacts this year's event as soon as we possibly can.⁣

“As always, our main priority is the safety of our festival-goers, artists and staff. We’ll be working with the local authorities and following all the latest government guidance. If we aren’t able to go ahead, all ticket holders will be able to rollover to Tramlines 2022 or given the opportunity to claim a refund.⁣⁣⁣

“Thank you once again for your continued support, it definitely doesn’t go unnoticed!⁣”

⁣Following the announcement, a Tramlines spokesman today said it had no further update to issue at this stage, with discussions still taking place, and the advice to ticket holders still stands.

Tramlines was cancelled last year due to Covid, with many ticket holders choosing to roll over their tickets to 2021.

The Streets, Royal Blood and Richard Ashcroft have been confirmed as headliners for this year’s event.
