Students are at the HUBs of AIDS awareness

SEVERAL audio and visual artists combine talents with the Sheffield-based band and AIDS awareness organisation CD4 on Thursday to deliver a thought-provoking night of entertainment.

It happens at the HUBs, the former pop museum turned Sheffield Hallam University Union, and is the latest initiative from CD4, a group of musicians who aim to spread awareness of HIV prevention through music. They regularly collaborate with other artists to challenge some of the stereotypes and perceptions people have about sexually transmitted diseases.

“We understand what it means to live with HIV and it is our responsibility to warn newer generations,” says band member Maria. “While new treatments are becoming available it is much easier to protect yourself than it is to live with the disease.”

CD4 will be the main act of the evening on Thursday when they bring in acts 4 Ever Young and Sosa-Xa to spread their key message at the Paternoster Row venue.

Band leader Carlos adds: “With our music we want to transmit a message that conveys life. We’re in Sheffield, right at the centre of England, and from here we, like a heart pumping blood throughout the body, aim to give impulse to new ways of raising awareness and breaking the stigma surrounding HIV.”

The show incorporates an exhibition of contemporary visual art showcasing contemporary local artists such as Jacqui Bellamy, Sarah Coleman, Cleo Swift, William Doust and Maria Tidball-Binz – all of whom seek to explore individual hidden emotions and feelings in their canvas and photographic expressions.

It all happens 5-10pm and is open to all. Entrance free.
